Why pay for what's free?

This week, Not-Ship celebrates its three-month birthday. It's growing up fast! At this age, most babies can make cooing sounds and reach for objects. Not-Ship has been slightly more ambitious: I've published 13 dispatches, gained nearly 1,000 readers, and played a (very minor) role in fixing some OECD statistics.

If you appreciate what I do here, I want you to consider paying for Not-Ship. A membership costs $9 a month, or $90 for an entire year.

Let me convince you

The world could use more data. Trust is vanishing; traditional media isn't working; truth is a matter of opinion. I don't know how to solve these problems, but I know that more data is part of the answer. Too often, that's something missing from today's conversations. Not-Ship's aim is to change that — to ground the issues we care about in accessible data. It's also why I'm saying no to paywalls.

Patrons are better than paywalls. I'm building Not-Ship on a patron model. The hope is this: A fraction of you will contribute enough that I can keep it free for others. Truthfully, this isn't the easiest way to cover my bills. The numbers behind how many readers will likely pay aren't encouraging. But I'm also willing to bet on you — that you care as much as I do. And that it's a mission you're willing to support.

You'll get insider perks. Paid members get access to all the data behind every Not-Ship post. It's spreadsheet nirvana over here! But I'm also open to new or different perks. If there's something that would tip the scale for you — votes on upcoming topics, a monthly 'behind the scenes' note, stickers — tell me! Let's figure this out together.

You haven't seen a newsletter like this before. Not-Ship is a thoughtful blend of delightful and informative. Each week, I use data to navigate the uncertainties of our messy world: Could things be different? Why do we all feel this way? What can we do? And together, we're building a community of curious minds trying to make sense of it all.

"[Not-Ship is] a much needed endeavour of making things more nuanced with data rather than more certain." — Petra Matijevic, subscriber.

I want Not-Ship and its mission to be around for the long haul. If you do, too, I hope you'll join me as a paid member.

But whether or not you're in a position to help out, I'm grateful you're part of this.

💙 Amanda
